The surface finish of stainless steel affects not only appearance but also corrosion resistance, cleanability, and fabrication behavior. Specifying the wrong finish can lead to unexpected costs, performance issues, or aesthetic mismatches on a project. This guide explains the five most common finishes — 2B, BA, No.4, HL, and No.8 mirror — covering surface roughness, production method, and typical applications.
2B Finish is the most common cold-rolled stainless steel surface. It is produced by cold rolling to final thickness, annealing in a controlled-atmosphere furnace, and then passing through a temper mill with highly polished rolls (a light skin pass). The result is a smooth, non-directional, matte gray surface with typical roughness Ra of 0.1–0.5 µm.
2B is the general-purpose finish for industrial equipment, chemical tanks, and components where surface appearance is functional rather than decorative. It welds well, forms well, and accepts subsequent polishing if a higher-grade cosmetic finish is required. At Zunkai, 2B is the standard finish for cold-rolled 304, 316, and duplex coil stock up to 3.0 mm thickness.
BA Finish (Bright Annealed) is produced by cold rolling followed by annealing in a controlled-atmosphere furnace containing nitrogen and hydrogen. The protective atmosphere prevents oxidation during annealing, eliminating the need for post-anneal pickling. The result is a bright, reflective surface with Ra of 0.05–0.1 µm — significantly smoother than 2B.
BA finish is specified for applications where reflectivity and cleanability are valued: kitchenware, architectural trim, pharmaceutical equipment, and appliance panels. The mirror-like surface also provides marginally better corrosion resistance than 2B because the smoother topography offers fewer crevice initiation sites. BA finish typically commands a 10–20% premium over 2B.
No.4 Finish is the most specified architectural and food-grade polished finish. It is produced by mechanically polishing a 2B or BA base surface with 150–180 grit abrasive belts, creating a uniform directional grain pattern with Ra of 0.2–0.5 µm. No.4 is the standard finish for restaurant equipment, elevator interiors, column covers, and food processing surfaces.
HL (Hairline) Finish uses finer abrasives (220–320 grit) to produce a continuous, fine-directional grain pattern that is smoother than No.4 (Ra 0.1–0.3 µm). HL is the preferred finish for escalator cladding, architectural handrails, and premium appliance panels. The finer grain obscures fingerprints better than mirror finishes and is more tolerant of minor surface scratches during fabrication and installation.
No.8 Mirror Finish is the highest-gloss mechanical polish, achieved by progressive polishing through successively finer abrasives followed by buffing with polishing compound to a non-directional, highly reflective surface. Ra values below 0.05 µm are achievable. Mirror finish is specified for decorative panels, column covers in high-end lobbies, and specialty architectural features where maximum reflectivity is required. Mirror finish is labor-intensive and typically adds 40–80% to the base material cost depending on gauge and sheet size.
For industrial equipment where the surface is not visible or not critical to aesthetics, 2B is the economical choice. For food contact surfaces requiring sanitary cleanability, No.4 is the standard. Architectural specifications increasingly favor HL for its balance of appearance, fingerprint resistance, and cost relative to mirror finish.
